What IS Leeuwarden for eyc?

Leeuwarden wants to become European Youth Capital in 2028! A place where you feel at home, can be yourself and make your dreams come true. Where you can (make) your voice heard. And where young people contribute ideas and have equal opportunities; that is our goal.

What does European Youth Capital mean?

Every year, a European city has the honour of holding this title. As a European Youth Capital, the city organises events, projects and initiatives with and for young people. Letting young people make their own impact on their environment, that's what it's about.

Why do we want this?

In Leeuwarden, we like to look at the strength of people and look positively to the future. But let's face it, it's not always easy to grow up these days. That's why we want to fully involve you in the (future) plans of our city. Together, we can do much more!

What does EYC offer you?

In short: a stage to bring your ideas for Leeuwarden to life. And to show that our city is a jack-of-all-trades. A place where you feel at home and where your ideas are heard.

It's important that young people have an eye on the things that concern them, from policy to the environment in which they live. With a fresh perspective, together we can make real change happen. The more young people participate, the greater the impact they can make on their own future. And that is not only good for them, but also for the whole city!

How are we going to do this?

Together! For the jury, we make a “bid book” full of plans and activities. We need your help here, but also that of organizations, companies and other parties that support and involve young people.

Do you also want to participate? Sign up!

What's in this bid book?

On February 11, 2025, we submitted our first 'bid' to the jury, the European Youth Forum. Here we talk about our ideas for becoming the youth capital of Europe. And about themes that we find important for Leeuwarden's future. When Leeuwarden makes it to the next round, we will further develop the plan.

What does EYC mean for Leeuwarden?

The title European Youth Capital (EYC) isn't just about winning a prize, but about the chance to shape the future of your city or town. When your municipality applies, you choose to give young people a real place in the developments that affect them. This means that we work with young people to:

Space for young people: We ensure that young people can actively participate in the social, economic and political life in their environment. Whether it's about our own projects, or developing new ideas and solutions together.

Young people in action: Young people bring fresh ideas and energy, helping to strengthen democracy. They contribute to the well-being of the city and ensure a vibrant and forward-looking society.

Sustainable participation: It's not just about a year of activities, but about lasting change. We work with young people on long-term ways to make their voice heard in decision-making, so that they can influence issues that directly affect them.

An inclusive future: By involving young people more, we lay the foundation for an inclusive society where their rights are better supported. This way, they can really influence their own future. We also look at other cities that have already held the title of European Youth Capital and learn from their successes. This is how we ensure that we not only dream, but take real steps for a better future for young people.

Why do we participate?

Leeuwarden wants the title of European Youth Capital (EYC) achieve young people more influence to describe how the city is developing. This is about taking part in everything: from culture and economy to politics and society. It's a chance to make your voice stronger in the city!

This title helps us to Youth Agenda to achieve, which ensures that young people have a solid basis for a promising future. So winning the title is not the end goal, but a means to get things done faster. It's the chance to get more youth participation to create and show the city, the region and the world how important your influence is.

By fighting together for the title, we can young people, organizations and the municipality connect more easily and make real changes. Because in the end, it's about one thing: young people need more impacting on their own future.

Who is EYC for?

We focus on young people between 12 and 27 years that have a connection with Leeuwarden. This can be done through work, study, hobbies or if you live here. The age limits are flexible, so even if you're just 27 or still in the last grade of primary school, you're welcome! We want to make sure everyone feels addressed, so we also look at where you live (city or villages) and other background information.

In addition, youth organizations and other organizations that work with young people are also important partners. They move into the networks where young people are also active, and help us reach you even better.

Is it also useful to me if I don't live in Leeuwarden?

Absolutely! It is interesting for any young person who has a thing for Leeuwarden. Whether you work, live, study, play sports or take music lessons there. We'd love to hear from you.
